Superman & Lois season 4"s penultimate episode brings back a huge villain to the show just in time for them to play a major role in the DC show"s finale. Superman & Lois has featured a notable assortment of DC antagonists, though these figures have had key adjustments to fit in best with the show. This is perhaps most easily noted currently when looking at the Superman & Lois season 4 cast and its depiction of Lex Luthor, who is an iteration of the character that has spent the last 17 years in jail because of Clark and Lois.
However, Lex is by no means the only major villain who"s gotten their time in the limelight within the live-action Superman show. Superman & Lois has featured versions of Parasite, Bizarro, Brainiac, Doomsday, and even made a more grounded version of DC antagonist Onomatopoeia, as well as rounding out this roster with new faces like Superman"s half-brother Tal-Rho. Despite each of these figures having their time in the sun, it seems wise that Superman & Lois has brought back what is seemingly the show"s most powerful villain in the last leg of the story.
Doomsday Returns Just In Time For The Final Episode Of Superman & Lois
Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9 sees Doomsday make a major return after uncertainty about whether he would ever come back to the story. Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5 saw Lois confront Doomsday, successfully theorizing that her visual similarity to the Lois Lane in his home universe would allow her to reach him and connect to him.
After Lois was able to draw comparisons between Doomsday"s family from when he was Bizarro and Lois and Clark"s family, Doomsday disappeared off, and stayed missing in the story until almost half a season later. But
the ending of Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9 sees Superman and Doomsday locked in another fight after Lex is able to recover the warped version of Bizarro and drive him berserk once more.
With the episode"s final moment seeing Clark dragged off by the hulking antagonist in a moment that"s eerily reminiscent of him dragging the Man of Steel"s body back to Earth after killing him, things aren"t looking especially promising for the DC hero as the show prepares to go into its final ever episode. However, this grim turn was arguably something the show needed, as the last time audiences saw Doomsday wasn"t the ideal final glimpse of the comic character.
Doomsday's Show Story Means He Needed To Be Part Of The Series' Ending Close While Lois" confrontation with Doomsday was an impactful part of the show"s story, and worked well to highlight her unique strengths as a character,
having Doomsday simply disappear without any fanfare would have been an underwhelming way for the DC villain to end his arc in the series. Bizarro was first introduced into Superman & Lois at the beginning of season 2, and has consistently played an important role in the ongoing DC story since that point, even becoming the show"s version of Doomsday later down the line.
Given this backdrop, it would have felt something of a waste to have this extensive narrative be cut short by the character just going missing and then never being seen again - particularly as leaving a major mystery hanging may have seemed a questionable approach for the final season of the show. Instead, building this mystery for just enough episodes that Doomsday"s return felt both rewarding and still reasonably surprising appears to have been the intention of this prolonged absence, which also allowed for Lex"s rivalry with Lois and Clark to be focused on further.
Having Superman & Doomsday Fight One Final Time Is A Perfect Sendoff For The DC Show
Since fighting Doomsday is what initially led to Superman"s death at the start of season 4, having the characters square off in the final episodes of the show one last time adds a perfect final note to it, while also keeping audiences on the edge of their seats, since Clark is suggested to be weaker now due to his deteriorating powers. Though Doomsday isn"t likely to be the sole focal enemy of the last episode of Superman & Lois, bringing this chapter to a perfect circle by having this battle repeat - hopefully with a different result - does make sense.
Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10 - the last episode in the series - is set to be released on December 2, 2024.
Superman & Lois has set itself up for a truly spectacular finale, with it seeming as though Clark will have to face off against both Doomsday and Lex Luthor in his new upgraded warsuit. Jordan and Jonathan Kent will surely help balance the odds, but either way, the last part of
Superman & Lois is set to be a true event that commemorates the series and its place in Superman"s on-screen legacy.
